Hempstead will protect Monk parakeets

After veterinarian Greg Nelson witnessed contractors with the Town of Hempstead removing Monk parakeet, also known as Quacker parrot, nests from light posts at Merrick Road Park and removing the current light system that provided both a platform for nest-building and generated significant heat for these warm-weather birds, Humane Long Island quickly met with Town of Hempstead officials to remedy the situation. The town immediately agreed to erect new, heated platforms for parakeets at Merrick Road Park as well as to ensure this never happens again by pledging to never change lights during the winter and nestling seasons. Officials will also work with Humane Long Island to have a wildlife rehabilitator present for future projects affecting the parakeets
