8-year tradition of geese massacres ended on Islip UFSD properties

For 8 years, Islip School District employed the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services to round-up and kill birds by the hundreds at Islip Schools year after year, including 200 on July 1, 2021. Thanks to Humane Long Island and our supporters, this cruel tradition has come to an end!

Following a meeting with Humane Long Island President John Di Leonardo, Islip Superintendent Dennis O’Hara committed to a moratorium on lethal roundups while working with Humane Long Island on a humane, nonlethal management plan. While this commitment does nothing for the hundreds of geese killed in years past, we are confident that Dr. O’Hara and the Islip Board of Education are committed to teaching students to coexist with wildlife moving forward.
